Taking the Flax

A friend (who knows a lot about MS and about nutrition) recently suggested that I begin taking flax oil. She warned that the taste is pretty strong so I might want to mix it with yogurt or something. I started this yesterday and while it is too early to report on results, I can say, wow, she wasn’t kidding about the taste. It overpowers everything. It makes any flavor yogurt Flax Oil flavored. (If you ever see that flavor, I don’t recommend it.)

It is nasty too. I mean, it might actually help lima beans but it ruins everything else. I tried mixing it with Ovaltine but this just in: oil doesn’t mix well with milk. I had a layer of oil suspended above the chocolaty goodness. It was like the Exxon Valdeez had passed through.  A silver lining is that it tastes better than crude oil.  (I think.)

Tonight I am going to try it with a blend of banana, ice cream, and battery acid.

I had a roommate who put flax seed in his smoothies.

I don't know about the oil but it would probably emulsify with smoothie ingredients when blended.

Try frying stuff in it. Mmmmm. Grilled Cheese Sandwich not fried with butter but with flax seed oil.

I'm chuckling as I read your results. I would have never thought to try flax oil and Ovaltine. Remember, I said 3-4 T a DAY, not a serving.

Jeff is right, the smoothie is the best vehicle. But don't cook it. Heat kills most of the beneficial qualities of flax. Yogurt is a great vehicle, but only 1/2 a teaspoon per serving. No more than that, less is OK.

I also mix some oil with all of our store bought salad dressings. It's good for everyone and the dressings have a strong enough flavor that you don't notice the flax. Just remember to start slowly. It's much easier to add more next time than to stop the gag reflex from too much the first time.

It's such a powerful anti-inflammatory that it's worth it to keep trying. Just don't mix it with ovaltine. Although as I write that, I have it every day with a milk based smoothie - so just make sure you put it in a blender, don't use the low-power spoon stir method.

Better luck today!
